TUESDAY May 24

The Hayes Select Ensembles of
Hayes Middle School
present a concert on

Tuesday, May 24
7:30pm

The Opera House
121 S. Bridge Street

The Hayes Select Ensembles are the premier groups at Hayes Middle.  The school’s Select Men and Women are made up of auditioned 7th and 8th graders, while Fermatas is comprised of just 8th grade students.  Meeting after school, the ensembles perform a variety of repertoire on varying concerts through the year.
At District Choral Festival this year, two of the ensembles received a rating of Excellent with Superior Distinction and another received an Excellent.  Members of these ensembles will be performing in Cincinnati this June.
Some song selections for this concert include Select Men:  Good Timber-Jeffery, Barbara Ann-Beach Boys.  Select Women: Shenadoah-arr Goetze, Lollipop-Chordettes. Fermatas:  Shut DeDo-Stonemill, Don’t Stop Believing-Journey.
The choirs are directed by Zachary Lindquist who hails from Chanhassen, Minnesota.  He received his Bachelors of Music from Michigan State University and has been directing choirs for three years.  This is his first year at Hayes Middle School. He loves all things music and is constantly inspired by his students’ creativity, humor and passion for singing.
Mrs. Carmen Karkau has accompanied the Hayes choirs for 8 years.  She is a graduate of GLHS and holds a B.M. degree from Capital University.  She also teaches piano, is a church organist/pianist/Accompanist at Emmanuel Lutheran Church and accompanies many band and choir students for Solo and Ensemble.   Mrs. Karkau loves working at the Middle School program at Hayes.

JUNE Artist of the Month
Artist Reception - Saturday, June 4th

Watching artists on TV helped Judy DeBolt learn how to put her creative ideas onto canvas.  This led to winning a contest and now to being June’s Artist of the Month at Ledge Craft Lane.
For Judy, those creative ideas came from viewing the world.  She says “beauty in nature has always been a personal fascination and started for me at a very young age.  I’ve always appreciated being out in nature and exploring all the visual possibilities it has to offer.  Camping was an excellent time for watching how the natural world changes.”  Her view of the world is reflected in her paintings.
Judy says she is not classically trained in art nor has she had any lessons until more recently.  In the past she would tune into WKAR and watch Helen VanWyke, Jerry Yarnell and Bob Ross.  For the past three years she has taken lessons with Kerri Goodman at Ledge Craft Lane. She’s gaining informative art insight including mixing colors and thinking outside the box.

Judy’s work will be on display for the entire month. Her artist’s reception will be on Saturday, June 4th from 2-4pm at Ledge Craft Lane, 120 S. Bridge St in GL. Judy says “it’s been a great journey working on the paintings and I look forward to a continuation of learning and observing all that is around me.  I hope you enjoy my work as much as I enjoy creating it.”
